- The Nervous System and your Well-being ›
As a Neuroworks patient you can expect to receive special attention. You will follow an individual path through assessment to treatment and review, tailored to your needs.
The nervous system is intimately linked to our well-being.
Symptoms ranging from pain and balance problems to memory and attention disorders, movement and motor skill conditions, often result from a poorly functioning nervous system.
At Neuroworks we assess under- or over-activity in your brain, relate this to your symptoms and offer the relevant treatment. This innovative approach is supported by current research.
The nervous system
-
The nervous system consists of two main parts. Firstly the central nervous system (CNS) consists of the two sides of the brain, brainstem, cerebellum and the spinal cord. Secondly the peripheral nervous system (PNS) consists of the nerves that connect the CNS to all parts of the body. The CNS receives information in an electrical form through our nerves, about our internal & external environment. The CNS assesses the messages, and sends corrective information back to the body so that it can adapt to our changing appropriately.
It is very important to consider the role of the nervous system in health conditions. If nerve cells remain poorly connected to other cells around them for long periods they become fragile and die off. This affects how the body functions. At Neuroworks we assess the functioning of the nervous system, and our treatments aim to keep cells functioning optimally for as long as possible.
The nervous system and its relationship with the body’s systems
-
The nervous system controls all the body’s systems. These include,
Vision
Sensation
Movement
Smell
Breathing
Blood circulation
Hearing Gastro-intestinal
Genito-urinary
Balance Immunity
Cardio-thoracic
The nervous system also affects the minds ability to
Be aware (consciousness)
Think
Concentrate
Remember
Solve problems
Talk, read, write
Choose / make decisions
Plan
Learn
Communicate or express emotions
Spatially orientate
Inhibit fear, anger or compulsive behaviour
So if a part of the nervous system is not working properly the connected body system(s) might be affected.
How the brain develops and adapts
-
Luckily brain development is a life long event. In the womb, brain cells (neurons) form at 500,000 per minute and before birth they reach an amazing formation rate of 2 million connections per second.
Just before birth the tangle of developing neurons begins to organise itself. Neurons compete to recruit other neurons and create expanding circuits with specific functions. Any neurons that fail die off in a process called ‘neural Darwinism’.
Structures within the brain mature mostly over the first twenty-five years. After this use of regions of the brain strengthens brain structures (increasing connectivity, or plasticity). Disuse weakens these structures (decreasing connectivity or atrophying). It really is a case of ‘use it, or lose it’.
The beauty of the brain is that it can keep adapting to situations and reshaping itself. But after a certain point the unhealthy areas will no longer be able to adapt so successfully and symptoms or poor functioning start to show. This is when treatment to improve connections between nerve cells is needed. And this is when Neuroworks can help.
A common condition is hemisphericity or brain lateralisation syndrome.
Each side of the brain can function at different levels if the frequency of nerve cell activation is different. This can happen even though nerves richly connect both sides (or hemispheres) of the brain.
For example if your left hemisphere fires at a frequency of 30Hz and your right hemisphere fires at 40Hz, you will have a tendency to use and attend to the functions of your faster right hemisphere. This would affect your perception and reaction to your environment and others around you. It would also affect the regulation of your bodily systems.
So if your right hemisphere fires faster you might like to draw pictures, but tend to be shy and prone to infections and your head may lean to the left.
Why the Neuroworks approach is so significant for your well-being
Neuroworks’ uses a neurological framework to understand and treat your condition. After assessing the functioning of your nervous system, we offer treatments that
stimulate relevant area to increase connections between nerve cells (plasticity), leaving it healthier and more functional
or
if part of the nervous system is over-active we provide treatment that decreases stimulation.
Our approach delivers the capacity to integrate a care package from a range of treatment types. It offers a powerful model for holistic health.
Many clinics offer some of the treatments used at Neuroworks, but most of them follow a particular discipline and only offer treatments that fit that school of thought. Examples include western medicine and its scientific thinking about disease and drug treatment; chiropractic and its trapped nerve subluxation theories; eastern medicine and its meridian and energy philosophies.
The neurological framework used at Neuroworks encompasses all treatment methods, weighing up the interaction of each with the brain and their particular strengths and potential impact upon an individual’s well-being.
